Australians tend to be friendly to wildlife and ensured the whale went free. They also wish to be friendly to UK citizens.
A combination of the UK-Australia trade agreement and labour shortages in Australia mean temporary working rights are being extended for UK visitors.
The age limit has been raised from 30 to 35 with immediate effect but the duration of stay allowed will not change until 1st July 2024. From that time, stays up to 3 years are allowed and the type of work you can do will widen considerably.
A 3 year stay does not need to be used up in consecutive years, if you prefer to split this. Neither will there be a requirement to carry out 88 days of agricultural work per year, as has long been the case.
Just bear in mind that not everything reported in the media is accurate. Temporarily working in Australia does not entitle you to remain, this won’t hurt but is not a free ticket to a permanent stay.
A Welcoming Environment
The sunny climate and cordial culture in Australia are well known, although employment conditions are now equally welcoming. The minimum wage is higher than in the UK and in practice, rarely applies.
In an employee’s market, wages are rising fast, with bar and restaurant work in Sydney paying up to £20 per hour plus perks. There are also opportunites in non hospitality areas, from construction to technology and for a range of tradespeople.
Travel to Australia is not cheap but if you have the skills to offer, potential employees might help, or offer a sign on bonus, or accomodation. Symptoms of the lowest unemployment rates in Australia for 50 years.
Alternative Options
35,000 people arrived in Australia from the UK on working holiday visas last year and that number should now grow. There are however other countries which welcome temporary workers from the UK.
Canada currently has a significant labour shortage and the working holiday visa their government offer is more or less an open work permit. Most fields of work are allowed and you can move between employers, or locations in Canada.
The UK government and New Zealand have agreed a scheme which is similar to the Australian deal. Changing the upper age limit to 35 and extending the time allowed to 3 years, along with the range of employment.
All three options are countries with which we share a language, along with the basis for governmental and legal systems. Attractive options if you are thinking of a working visit, or looking at a permanent stay.
