We don’t have issues moving plants within the UK but other advice in the video on caring for them will help.
Moving home can be stressful for plants, which have become acclimatised to the light, humidity and temperature in their previous environment. Helping them to settle in is essential to their wellbeing.
We are primarily considering house plants, although you may be able to take plants from your garden. Moving during their dormant season can help, along with preserving as much of the root ball as possible.
An alternative is to take cuttings, a little while before your move. Most species move better when younger, they are easier to transport than larger plants and you can increase the number you have at no cost.
A few elements of good care for indoor varieties will also apply outdoors. Rare, or tropical plants may need a different approach, although most will thrive in a new home, if you follow a few straightforward rules.
Actions To Take
To reduce weight, movement stress and leaks, don’t water just before you move. Pruning can also help with movement, the main objective should be to create a more compact shape, to prevent breakages.
Temporary removal from decorative pots will safeguard them and again reduce weight. Pack in boxes with support packing, to make sure your plants can’t fall over. Wrapping them gently in fleece can help and will also reduce any temperature drop.
Moving is a good time to checking your plants for unwanted pests, you will not want them to travel with you, or see infection spread.
On arrival at your new home, unpack plants promptly and for most, a couple of hours left covered while they settle in makes sense. Then uncover, with exposure to a reasonable level of light, rather than bright sun, or shade.
A good misting, or gentle watering should be fine and best to avoid feeding, or further pruning for a week or so. The objective is to avoid plants going into growth mode, until they acclimatise to their new environment.
